Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Baltimore MD/Washington DC
348 AM EDT Tue Apr 8 2025

.SYNOPSIS...
A secondary cold front will push offshore this morning, giving
way to cooler and windy conditions today. A strong area of high
pressure builds in the wake of this front through the middle of
the week. An upper-level system may bring additional rain to
the area Thursday into Friday, then high pressure returns again
over the weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
The secondary cold front that has been mentioned for the past
several days will finally push through the region throughout
this morning and move offshore. Already starting to see winds
shift out of the NW and increase into the 20 to 30 mph range.
Could see some brief gusts later this afternoon closer to 35 or
40 mph, primarily up along the MD/PA border. However, not
expecting anything to quite reach Wind Advisory criteria at this
time. This is due to poor alignment of wind direction with
height, and an already marginal wind field atop the mixed layer.

A strong Canadian high pressure system pushes into the region
overnight into Wednesday morning. This will lead to a
significant decrease in winds and mostly clear skies overnight.
This should allow areas to decouple and cool significantly.
A significant freeze is expected for almost all areas tonight.
Now is the time to protect and sensitive early season vegetation
as lows are forecast to be in the 20s for most. Areas right
along the Chesapeake Bay may not quite reach freezing, but areas
just a few miles inland likely drop into the 20s to low 30s as
well.

&&

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
As high pressure builds overhead and eventually pushes offshore
on Wednesday, a brief return to quiet weather is expected.
Highs return to the mid 50s Wednesday afternoon under mostly
sunny skies as winds switch back out of the south.

The upper-level pattern will become more amplified toward the end of
the week. The initial shortwave and associated low pressure system
will approach on Thursday. Rain chances will increase Thursday as
the warm front lifts into the area. This of course will also
come with an increase in temperatures back to the upper 50s to
low 60s for areas along and south of the front. However, highs
north of the front remain in the upper 40s to low 50s.

&&

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
An upper trough moving across the Eastern Seaboard looks to cutoff
Friday in vicinity of the Mid-Atlantic, then slowly slide offshore
over the weekend. There remains considerable difference in the
position of the cutoff low, with models also showing varying
solutions in the position/track of the surface low. Where the lows
track will determine where most of the precipitation falls. For now,
the highest rain chances for our area will be Friday into Friday
night, then depending on the low`s track additional showers continue
into Saturday. Conditions dry out on the backside of the low as it
pulls away from the area Saturday night. High pressure builds into
the area Sunday into Monday, bringing dry and seasonal temps.

&&

.AVIATION /07Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
A secondary cold front pushing through this morning has brought
an abrupt wind shift out of the NW. Behind this secondary cold
front, northwest winds will gust up to 30 knots today. Already
seeing CIGs lift quickly as this front moves through, so expect
VFR conditions today as high pressure approaches.

High pressure returns late Tuesday into Wednesday, which should
keep winds light and conditions VFR.

Southerly winds may gust to around 20 kt Thursday. Sub-VFR
conditions due to low ceilings and rain are possible late Thursday.

Sub-VFR conditions are possible for most of Friday into Friday night
as a cutoff upper low meanders near the area. A period of steady
rainfall is possible at all terminals, though confidence in when or
how much rain falls is very uncertain at this time. Additional
showers and sub-VFR conditions could linger into Saturday, then VFR
conditions return Saturday night into Sunday.

&&

.MARINE...
A secondary cold front continues to push offshore this morning,
resulting in a sharp increase in NW winds. Brief gale-force
winds are possible late this morning into the afternoon, but
still thinking the duration of any potential Gale gusts will be
too short. If there is any spot more favorable, it would be the
northern portions of the Chesapeake Bay. Elsewhere, confidence
remains high in a high-end SCA event at this time.

Tonight is a great setup for northerly channeling of winds,
along the open waters of the Chesapeake Bay. An SCA was issued
for this threat into Wednesday morning.

High pressure returns by Wednesday, with sub-SCA conditions
expected at this time.

SCA conditions are possible again Thursday into Thursday night
with southerly flow developing ahead of an approaching frontal
system, which will bring unsettled conditions by Thursday night.

An area of low pressure moving in vicinity of the local waters
Friday will bring periods of showers. East to southeast winds look
to remain below SCA levels at this time through Friday night. As the
low pressure moves away from the area, northwest winds develop
Friday night into Saturday, with northerly channeling possibly
producing SCA conditions Saturday night.
